Any tune that is suitable for Nottingham Swing will be suitable for this dance. If the band does not have a 16-bar hornpipe then they can play a 32-bar hornpipe AB or you can do the dance twice to once through the tune.
Written and debuted in 1975 at a barn dance in the crypt at St Martins in the Fields, Trafalgar Square, London. This was the first dance I ever wrote. I was faced with an audience of about 200, mostly in their late teens and twenties, most of whom had never been to a barn dance and a significant proportion of whom had a very poor grasp of the English language. I wanted a dance that was very visual to teach and simple to do so I made this one up on the spot. It is a simplified version of the Butterfly Hornpipe.
Sometimes I will do stars instead of circles in A1, and have even been known to mix up stars, circles, left and right.
